A Taste You Need to Try

Down Freeport Boulevard, you can find a new Chinese restaurant that features bubbly decorations and welcoming workers. Taste of Original serves a variety of popular Chinese dishes that leaves mouths watering from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The restaurant is somewhat small, with a capacity of around 90 people and a maximum of twelve people at a table. The restaurant is decorated with many different Chinese texts describing friendships being made and other happy times. There are also traditional Chinese decorations such as the waving cat, and a variety of plants. I think this combination of decor would be appealing to people of all ages. That, combined with the untraditional black tableware, creates a cool and modern vibe.

To add to the good ambience, the workers are very welcoming to their guests, accommodating the needs of customers as quickly as possible. There is no need to worry if you cannot speak Chinese; the waiters and waitresses are able to speak English well, and the menus are written in English.

During my visit to Taste of Original, I ordered the Beef Noodle Roll, Salt and Pepper Fish Filet, and Stir Fried Green Beans with garlic sauce. With my food, I was offered a selection of four different teas. If tea is not for you, there are other beverages including water and soda.

The noodle rolls at Taste of Original are very popular, consisting of a meat such as pork, shrimp, beef, etc., wrapped with rice noodles and topped with a homemade sweet sauce. This combination of simple ingredients brings a very delicious taste and good texture from the rice noodle. Noodle rolls are therefore a good dish to order if you haven’t tried Chinese food before.

The Stir Fried Green Beans have a nice snappy texture from being stir fried in oil first and later mixed in with the garlic sauce. I would definitely recommend having the green beans with a side of rice in order to balance out their savory flavor.

Finally, the Salt and Pepper Fish Fillet is a deep fried fish dish seasoned with salt and pepper and cooked with jalapeños for some extra spice. An explosion of flavor and very crispy texture makes the dish both interesting and delicious. I would recommend eating this dish with a side of rice to balance out the palette and complement the dish.

Overall, I had an amazing experience at the restaurant. There was a very homey atmosphere and the staff were quite welcoming. The great service, yummy food, and wide variety of Chinese dishes, earns this restaurant a 4.5 star rating. I would highly recommend you try it yourself.

Konnichiwa from Japan! Five Students Come from Abroad

On March 6th, McClatchy welcomed five foreign exchange students from their sister school in Japan, Nitta Seiun. For two weeks, the students saw many new sights in America and interacted with the students as they roamed the halls.

Under the supervision of Japanese teacher Mr. Fisher, the students gave presentations to classes and interacted with the students in the Japanese classes during fun activities or helping around in the classroom. This was the first time since the outbreak of COVID-19 that McClatchy has been able to receive foreign exchange students from Japan.

The students, Kouta, Fumiya, Kaito, Mimi, and Reina were under homestay with students at McClatchy during their time here. The students enjoyed their time in America, trying different foods and seeing new sights, as well as going on a trip to  San Francisco’s Japantown with the Japanese ¾ class.

During their stay, the students reported seeing many surprising things that they do not see regularly in Japan. One major difference that Mimi, Kouta, Fumiya, and Reina pointed out was the ability to be on your phone and eat during class. “The school is very free,” Reina describes in her observation of the school. However, seeing such a difference made their visit more entertaining and added to what made their trip fun.

In America, the students ate many different foods that are not commonly found in Japan. All of the students found the hamburger to be their most favorite food during their trip. Additionally, Reina thought  many of the American foods were delicious, such as the sandwiches, sweets, fruits, and coffee. America has “rubbed off” on the students as they learn different slang and mannerisms, such as “fire” and “lit” to share laughs with the students at McClatchy.

On their last day, the Japanese students were given their farewells from the Japanese classes and were shown a slideshow presentation of their time in America. It was an extremely emotional day for the students as they said their goodbyes to the classes before taking an airplane home to Japan on Saturday, March 18th. Giving a farewell message on the intercom to all of the students in McClatchy, the Japanese students  shared their gratitude and goodbyes.

With COVID-19 seeming to be under more control, borders have begun to open up internationally, allowing the long awaited upcoming trip to Japan for CKM’s Japanese ¾ class. Mr. Fisher organizes the trips and presentations for the Japanese students, supervising and helping the students ease into McClatchy, allowing them to have an amazing and fun two weeks in America.

The Sandwich, a Flexible and Creative Food

Sandwiches are a staple food that is open to creativity with the ability to have many different ingredients. Quick to make with various versions of sandwiches such as peanut butter and jelly, BLT, grilled cheese, and many others. Some sandwiches can last for a long time, allowing you to premake sandwiches and take it as lunch for school. A meal I regularly made for school lunch since freshman year, sandwiches are a quick and delicious food to make. Included with the ability to change the ingredients for the sandwich, you won’t get as easily tired by it when eating it repeatedly. Here is a recipe of the sandwich I have been making and changing up for the past four years of making school lunches.

Ingredients: 2 slices of bread, 1 egg(optional if you want to use a pan or not), 1 tablespoon of any oil, pinch of salt/pepper, ham (amount of slices is up to you), 1 tomato slice, pickles, japanese mayonnaise

Estimated Time: 5 minutes

Heat up a pan with the oil on medium heat
Crack egg on pan and let the whites cook and form around the yolk
Flip the egg and sprinkle a pinch of salt and pepper
After a minute, turn the heat to off and flip the egg again to sprinkle salt and pepper on the other side
Have your two pieces of bread out and drizzle Japanese Mayo on both pieces
On one piece of bread, place your ingredients together in the following order to have the best stability and spread of ingredients:pickles, tomato, ham, egg, and finally place your other piece of bread

Sandwiches can have multiple recipes to make many different flavors and variations. This variation lets your creativity and tastes show in making your own unique sandwich. Many changes can be made to the recipe of this sandwich and can be made with cheaper ingredients. Especially with the increasing egg costs that are currently happening, the removal of the egg will make the sandwich cheaper, and removes the need to use a pan then clean it. Sandwiches are open to creativity and are able to be made in the way you can enjoy while being a quick meal to make. As you can see from the images of the sandwich I made, I had different types of twists or changes such as the bread or the ham. You can always change the sandwich to your liking making it one of the best foods to make that is quick and easy.
