Tennessee’s Anti-Transgender and Anti-Drag Laws

In the last two months, transgender and queer rights have been under attack by the republican government in Tennessee. After banning gender-affirming care for minors and putting restrictions on drag shows, people in the queer community are both concerned and outraged.

On March 2, 2023, Governor Lee signed a bill that bans gender-affirming medical care for minors, beginning in July. In addition, on March 2, Tennessee announced that they will begin heavily regulating drag performances that take place in public spaces where children may see.

The LGBTQ+ community is devastated after finding out that Tennessee is trying to ban all gender-affirming treatment for people under 18. This includes surgeries, hormones, and even hormone blockers. Hormone blockers allow transgender youth to prevent or postpone any changes that occur in the body during puberty, letting them explore their identity and possibly get on the hormones they want.

According to the National Institutes of Health, 82% of transgender youth have considered ending their lives and 40% have attempted suicide. The leading cause for this affliction among the community is the general stigma around the idea of transitioning.

Gender dysphoria is a term defined by the National Health Service as “a sense of unease that a person may have because of a mismatch between their biological sex and their gender identity.” The treatments being banned in Tennessee are what help transgender people alleviate their dysphoria and make them feel comfortable in their own skin. When you restrict struggling transgender youths’ use of these treatments, like hormones and hormone blockers, you’re making it harder for them to transition in the future.

Many say that the state is out of line and that this ban is unconstitutional, arguing that parents should make medical decisions for their children, not the government. Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal, a mother of a gender-nonconforming child, said in a speech given at the house of Representatives: “My child is free to be who they are. And in that freedom comes a responsibility for us as legislators to protect that freedom to be who they are.”

Though many argue that the state is only enforcing these restrictions to protect kids from making changes to their bodies that they can’t reverse, an overwhelming majority of those saying these things are doing so because of prejudice. For example, political commentator, Michael Knowles, said during the Conservative Political Action Conference, “Transgenderism must be eradicated from public life entirely, the whole preposterous ideology.”

Another threat the LGBTQ+ community is facing at the moment is the regulation of drag in Tennessee. Drag is a form of performing art that commonly involves exaggerated displays of femininity and sometimes masculinity. Performers, often called either drag queens or drag kings, wear flamboyant makeup and clothes and often pair it with either dancing, singing, or comedy sets.

The art form will be banned from taking place on public property because of the possibility that a child might see. Specifically, the bill states that it will not allow “cabaret” performances to be put on in public near schools, parks, or churches. If violated, the performers may be charged with a misdemeanor or felony. The state says that children should not be exposed to adult entertainment, insinuating that all drag is inherently sexual.

Again, many argue that this is unconstitutional and goes against the first amendment as it infringes on free speech.

Famous drag queen, RuPaul Andre Charles, spoke out against the bill in an Instagram post wherein he states, “Drag queens are the marines of the queer movement.” And this is true. For example, During the stonewall riots of 1969, a famous drag queen who went by Marsha P. Johnson (born Malcolm Michaels Jr.) rose up as one of the leading activists of the queer movement and one of the first drag performers to have a public platform.

When asked how these bills will affect the LGBTQ+ community, Mx. Herold, a teacher here at McClatchy said, “I think this is a threat to the safety of the LGBTQ+ community. One of the things that worries me is fighting within the community.”

In response to what the queer community can do to push back, they said, “A lot of what we can do is protest. I’m afraid that this country will respond with violence. It’s terrible for people in those states because they shouldn’t have to leave their homes, but they’re being driven out.”

The LGBTQ+ community has forever been demonized by the uneducated, the conservatives, the republicans, Christians, etc. But it’s come a step too far with these bills that are being passed that explicitly infringe on their rights, whether it be to health care or to free speech.

La Lechuza

The history of La Lechuza began centuries ago in Mexican and Texan folklore. Legend has it that the Barn Owl was a witch who was exposed for practicing evil magic and the townspeople decided to assassinate her because of it.

In order to get her revenge, she returned as a very creepy ladybird. She was a shapeshifter that could appear as an ordinary witch during the day and then transform into an enormous bird with a woman’s face.

Many have given a variety of descriptions of what La Lechuza appears to look like; many say La Lechuza was as tall as seven feet along with a 15-foot wingspan while others say she was a small bird but both with the face of an old woman.

It is reported that La Lechuza was seen flying through the air or perching on trees, looking for people to kill. She is known for only coming out during the night so if you ever find yourself walking around and hear a bird screech at night, that’s an omen that La Lechuza is wandering near.

What La Lechuza does for exact revenge varies in the version of the story, though most suspect that La Lechuza carries away her unsuspecting prey to her lair. She often lures her targets out of their houses by making baby crying sounds or by swooping down on cars. Her most common prey are children or drunk people as they are the most vulnerable.

Various methods are claimed to protect you against La Lechuza. Such methods are: tying seven knots in a rope and hanging it by the front door, throwing salt and chili powder into the bird’s face, and finally shooting the bird.

Konnichiwa from Japan! Five Students Come from Abroad

On March 6th, McClatchy welcomed five foreign exchange students from their sister school in Japan, Nitta Seiun. For two weeks, the students saw many new sights in America and interacted with the students as they roamed the halls.

Under the supervision of Japanese teacher Mr. Fisher, the students gave presentations to classes and interacted with the students in the Japanese classes during fun activities or helping around in the classroom. This was the first time since the outbreak of COVID-19 that McClatchy has been able to receive foreign exchange students from Japan.

The students, Kouta, Fumiya, Kaito, Mimi, and Reina were under homestay with students at McClatchy during their time here. The students enjoyed their time in America, trying different foods and seeing new sights, as well as going on a trip to  San Francisco’s Japantown with the Japanese ¾ class.

During their stay, the students reported seeing many surprising things that they do not see regularly in Japan. One major difference that Mimi, Kouta, Fumiya, and Reina pointed out was the ability to be on your phone and eat during class. “The school is very free,” Reina describes in her observation of the school. However, seeing such a difference made their visit more entertaining and added to what made their trip fun.

In America, the students ate many different foods that are not commonly found in Japan. All of the students found the hamburger to be their most favorite food during their trip. Additionally, Reina thought  many of the American foods were delicious, such as the sandwiches, sweets, fruits, and coffee. America has “rubbed off” on the students as they learn different slang and mannerisms, such as “fire” and “lit” to share laughs with the students at McClatchy.

On their last day, the Japanese students were given their farewells from the Japanese classes and were shown a slideshow presentation of their time in America. It was an extremely emotional day for the students as they said their goodbyes to the classes before taking an airplane home to Japan on Saturday, March 18th. Giving a farewell message on the intercom to all of the students in McClatchy, the Japanese students  shared their gratitude and goodbyes.

With COVID-19 seeming to be under more control, borders have begun to open up internationally, allowing the long awaited upcoming trip to Japan for CKM’s Japanese ¾ class. Mr. Fisher organizes the trips and presentations for the Japanese students, supervising and helping the students ease into McClatchy, allowing them to have an amazing and fun two weeks in America.

Q&A with ASB President 2024 Zach Gee

Q: So Zach, tell me a little bit about yourself?

A: My name is Zach, I’m a Junior. I am on the tennis team and I have been in ASB for two years. I enjoy traveling, watching movies, and hanging out with friends.

Q: What made you want to run for ASB president?

A: I saw a lot of potential in this school, for it to be even better than it already is. As a student here, I just wanted to do everything within my power to maximize the experience for everybody. I’m glad that I have been given the chance.

Q: What are your plans for the upcoming year?

A: In my campaign speech I made three points, one was that I want to beautify the campus. I want more murals and more plants. I also want to give our clubs more opportunities to engage with the community. The big thing addressed was the functional issues at our school like the bathrooms. My list is set to change and obviously I’ll have more goals in the future, but that’s for now.

Q: How will you make CKM a better school?

A: I think what makes the school experience really fun is the spirit. So I am definitely going to make it a goal to try to encourage bigger crowds at our sports games, at our dances, and all sorts of spirit events. I hope to beautify the campus, both in terms of its aesthetics and also how it functions. I think that will make a difference for a lot of students here including myself. And I think by promoting inclusivity, that’s a big one. I feel like all of the programs that we have here kind of separate us into our own individual bubbles and we have our classes with the same people for all four years and so we don’t have a lot of opportunities to reach out to other people and make friends outside our programs. That has definitely had an effect on how united we are and I want to have more opportunities for students to get together and collaborate.

Q: At the debate you mentioned that you wanted to improve the school bathrooms, how do you plan on doing this?

A: So, Eagen and I talked about it very briefly between rallies and it’s obviously going to be a complicated process because typically ASB doesn’t work on those kinds of issues here, but I’m just going to start by talking to Mrs. Eagen and seeing how the process works. And like I said, I am more than willing to take it up to the administration and reach out to district officials, because I know that they do have that authority.

Q: How do you plan on getting students more involved in school activities/events?

A: Well, I think that the biggest thing there is using social media, and student outreach in general. Just making everyone aware of what events are coming up, and it’s pretty important if you want to bring in a big crowd. I would say right now we are actually doing pretty well with our spirit events. For example, I went to the basketball game a few weeks ago, it was Kennedy vs McClatchy, and the whole gym was filled, so I think we are doing a really good job right now with spirit. I want to keep that up and keep encouraging those crowds.

Q: How do you plan on making ASB more inclusive?

A: So from what I know, ASB is at its limit right now, there is a full classroom and so not everybody gets to be part of the class which is unfortunate so I’m definitely going to try to provide more opportunities for students to have a say, whether it be a simple google form where they can provide their insight and give their opinions. But also that starts with ASB asking for their help. It’s not up to me who joins our class, that’s more the advisers, so what I can do is provide more opportunities for students to give their input outside of the class.

Q: Is there anything that you want to mention that we haven’t talked about yet?

A: I am super excited to fulfill this role, but obviously I am very nervous. You know, while I have been president of my class twice, it is a much different role when you are the president of the entire student body. And so I hope that everybody just understands that I’ll make mistakes and this is my first time, but I will do my best.

KSI vs Jake Paul

As many people know, the more talk there is about KSI and Jake Paul, the more likely arguments are to break out over who would beat who in a fight. KSI vs. Paul is one of the biggest youtuber beef’s out there and definitely takes the cake when it comes to YouTube boxing.

KSI has had two fights with Logan Paul (Jake Paul’s older brother) one being a tie and the other a split decision favoring KSI. During their first bout, fellow YouTuber Deji was involved alongside KSI and fought Jake Paul on the same card. With Deji losing, Paul secured his first win and would move on to win by TKO (technical knockout) against yet another YouTuber, Gib. KSI would gain his first win against Joe Weller, and his second against Logan Paul.

Ever since the last fight, Jake Paul and KSI have been trash-talking each other. KSI bringing up the fact that he beat Jake Paul’s brother Logan and how Jake is next. Jake Paul has been bragging about beating Gib and Deji.

As time and the boxing community moved on, KSI and Jake did not. They argued over social media platforms such as Twitter, Instagram and their own individual YouTube channels. This has gone on for over four years, with no respite from either side. This angered Jake at times and would tell KSI he’s ducking because he is too scared to find a date to set a pro boxing match and face him in the ring. KSI either just ignored these threats or told his fans that at some point he would fight Jake Paul. However he is too busy with music and is thus unavailable.

More recently, however, Logan Paul and KSI have settled their differences and gone on to make the brand name “Prime.” Jake Paul has been supportive of his brother and has expressed admiration at his success,  but he has never shown any respect or gratitude towards KSI, no matter what.

Currently, KSI and Logan Paul are doing fantastic finance wise, and will hopefully continue to do great things in the future. However, KSI and Jake Paul know they need to end the feud once and for all, and put an end to the years long delay. They have decided that in 2023, the scores will be settled. Both men will be in their prime, one will win and the other will take defeat. There will be no draw.
