Lowrider Law Lifted

Lowrider cars aren’t just cars, they are much more than that. They have meaning behind all the cars and to the owners.

In 1982 lowriding became illegal because many people would use lowrider cars for gang violence, especially in the Hispanic community. People would fear that if they saw a car pass by they would be hurt.

My opinion about this law being lifted is good for me and others because people can now cruise without being pulled over for driving a lowrider. People would get pulled over because they assumed it was a gang affiliation. This caused a stigma amongst the lowrider community because people associated lowrider owners with bad people.

Lowriders are beautiful cars to be shown for their beauty and for Mexican culture. Car shows are to show culture to Mexican power and brown pride.

In the late 90s, it was thought that people drove cars like this to be aggressive or just to cause trouble, but it’s never been for that reason. There were people who were in gangs and then there were people who showed respect while driving these beautiful cars. But people in gangs would use lowriders to do drive-bys and cause gang violence.

This law being lifted is a good thing because people can now enjoy their time out in their lowrider without any trouble or getting pulled over by police. But it’s a good thing for Mexicans because now we can have more car shows to continue our culture surrounding cars and to bring in new people into the community. Our Raza is to be respected as well.

I took this picture a while back because it shows that cruising isn’t a crime but to show respect to our nation of brown power.

I feel like it is great to finally have this law lifted because a lot more cars can be shown out and about and ready to shine.

The pics I took were at a downtown car show for people to lift the law to cruise without getting arrested or pulled over. A lot of people even came around to support the culture and to lift the law.

Celebrate Fall with Planet Zine!

Are you craving Halloween art, recipes, poetry, and more? Be sure to check out Planet Zine’s newest issue and keep up with their latest zines, released every other month. Their most recent Halloween issue was just released, now selling for $5 each. To purchase their bi-monthly zines, find a member or follow them on Instagram, @916planetzine!

If you enjoy the Prospector’s cartoons and poetry, you will love the (independent) zine club, Planet Zine! Together, they make collaborative, themed magazines every other month. This most current issue is their 7th so far, though there will surely be many more to come. Their zines compile artwork and writing from students at McClatchy; If you want to support student artists outside of school events, definitely keep up with their projects throughout the year!

Halloween is one of, if not the most, artistically expressive major holidays, and Planet Zine’s staff has taken advantage of it. This month’s zine is Halloween-themed, and it will surely be one to remember, as students went above and beyond to celebrate their favorite spooky festivities. Articles in this month’s edition include Halloween makeup, art, and even a delicious recipe for pumpkin bread. In addition to their regular poetry, cartoons, and more. Planet Zine’s artists are given total creative freedom when it comes to their work, every piece is handmade, from the heart. If you are looking to embrace the creativity of All Hallows Eve, Planet Zine welcomes you to celebrate with them!

If you aren’t in a particularly creepy mood, Planet Zine changes its monthly theme with every new issue. Some other themes the club has done include pride, botanical, love, and even under the sea. If any of the latter strikes your fancy, many are still for sale within the club. Always be sure to keep up with future themes and Planet Zine’s newest articles. Rumor has it that the next issue may be without color… stay tuned to find out!

All of the members of Planet Zine are either students or young Sacramento artists, they compile, print, and distribute completely independently, which is why your support is so important. While many of Planet Zine’s artists go to McClatchy, Planet Zine is not affiliated with CKM whatsoever. All their fundraising is done through selling zines, whether that be via Instagram or at one of their booths. If you do decide to purchase from Planet Zine, know that your support will go toward helping the club stay independent and unrestrained.

I have to admit my bias toward Planet Zine as I am a member as well; However, you don’t have to join the club to find its value. Planet Zine is fairly accomplished as far as zines tend to go. Their February zine, love, was put on display at the Kondos Gallery at City College along with dozens of other artistic zines made by Sacramento artists alike. Sadly the exhibit has already ended, but if you missed it you should keep up with Planet Zine on Instagram so you never miss another beat! They post all their events as well as updates on their hard work. Stay in the loop with Planet Zine to see just how high they can fly!

If you do end up investing in Planet Zine’s zines they would like to thank you personally and they hope you enjoy and continue to support their work.

2023 Homecoming Parade Overview

As C.K. McClatchy’s Homecoming Week comes to a close, the Homecoming Parade begins! This yearly parade is the perfect way to precede our Homecoming Game, and of course, our Homecoming dance.

The yearly Homecoming Parade is a can’t-miss event for any McClatchy student. Floats for different sports teams, clubs, and even specialty programs were beautifully decorated with our school colors; red and white. Plus, it was a great opportunity to score some free candy from parade participants throwing it out to viewers.

This year’s parade opened up with our AFJROTC students in uniform, leading the way, marching through the streets while showing their school spirit. They were followed by CKM’s very own band. Members played beautiful live music on a variety of instruments.

And arguably the most important part of McClatchy, the teachers, were of course represented as well. Many teachers were on bikes, riding as a part of the parade. Plus, the HISP float had giant paper cutouts of HISP teachers’ heads.

Clubs weren’t left out either. Hispamix marched through the streets holding a variety of flags from all different Hispanic countries. Their float was also beautifully decorated to represent el Día de los Muertos. Many members were dressed up in traditional outfits and had their faces painted in calavera face paint and were followed by friends and family in a line of lowriders.

Each grade also had its own float. The senior’s float was football-themed, with a whole mini football field. It also had a football flying through the goalpost. The sophomore’s float was covered in the sophomore’s signature green and palm trees to go along with it.

Many of CKM’s sports teams were also part of the parade. From women’s volleyball to our football teams. The women’s tennis float was embellished with little tennis balls. CKM’s own football team, ready for the homecoming game against Burbank, came to bring the ruckus as well. Following them were the cheerleaders. Dressed in their own uniforms, they were there to hype our Lions up.

This year’s Homecoming Parade was one to remember. With so many more students here at McClatchy this year, every homecoming activity is sure to be a blast. We hope that you all attended the CKM vs. Burbank football game as well as the Barbie Homecoming dance!

Frantic Over Fentanyl

With Fentanyl overdoses on the rise, there are a few things people need to understand.

What exactly fentanyl is, how it’s affecting people, how to know if someone is overdosing, and how to help that person.

According to the Centers for Disease Control Fentanyl is an opioid that is 100 times more potent than morphine and produces a similar effect as heroin. Typically, it’s prescribed by an authorized official or doctor for illnesses such as cancer and post-surgery.

Although it is prescribed by doctors, that is only one kind of fentanyl. There are two types of fentanyl, pharmaceutical fentanyl and illegally made fentanyl, or (IMF) for short.

IMF is added to other drugs to increase their potency of them resulting in a more intense high. Most of the United States’ illegal fentanyl is imported anonymously from China.

There are multiple ways that people intake fentanyl. Examples of this are inhaling it, smoking it, swallowing the tablet, in patches, and mixing it with other drugs.

The IMF is a rapidly growing concern here in the US. The CDC reports that there are over 150 synthetic opioid deaths each day. The government program Get Smart About Drugs (GSAD) reports that for Americans aged 18-45, fentanyl overdose is the leading cause of death.

The US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) states that only 2 milligrams of fentanyl is lethal. That is approximately the size of Lincoln’s nose to chin on a penny.

Each year there has been a gradual increase in the number of deaths related to fentanyl. According to statistics from UC San Francisco in 2021 around 6,000 people overdosed on fentanyl in California alone, some of which were children.

With the more and more deaths caused by synthetic opioids, we must know what a drug overdose looks like and how we can help without putting up a risk for our own safety.

The DEA says to look out for these warning signs of overdose. Small shrunken pupils, falling asleep or losing consciousness, slowness, weakness, no breathing, choking, limp body, cold sweaty skin, and skin discoloration mainly in the lips or nail beds.

Now that we know what to look out for we need to know how we can help which can be tricky sometimes especially since most overdoses are unexpected.

A useful tool for situations like these is naloxone, more commonly known as Narcan. When someone is overdosing on fentanyl you don’t want to give them mouth to mouth as that opens up an opportunity for you to overdose. Instead, inject the Narcan into their nose and wait 2 minutes. If they don’t respond to the first one, Administer a Second Dose. Another important step to never forget is to call emergency services for help.

Now that we know what fentanyl is and what to do in the situation that someone is overdosing we are educated on what to do in times of crisis which unfortunately is the reality we live in today.

McClatchy Vs. River City

Last Friday The McClatchy football team played River City at Hughes Stadium.

McClatchy’s latest game against River City was a close match ending with an unfortunate loss for the Lions. The Lions started the game off strong with #11, Kiko Brambila running the first touchdown to set McClatchy up 6-0 on River City. During this half, I had the opportunity to speak with Coach Fisher and ask him a question.

“How do you think McClatchy will do against River City in this game?”

“River City is a beatable team. Every year in the metro league River City is a tough team, But a beatable one at that.”

In quarter 2, the Lions played hard and fought harder to keep the lead in their favor. Unfortunately, near the end of the quarter River City made a play and got a touchdown in. RC also scored the field goal which led to the Lions being down 6-7 going into the second half.

At halftime, I could interview Coach Davis about how he felt the team would fare going into the second half.

“How do you think the team will do going into the second half?”

“Good, good. We need to stay focused and motivated going into the second half to win this one.”

McClatchy kicked off to River City in the 2nd half. There were lots of trading yards back and forth between the teams until River City scored yet another touchdown and field goal leading the Lions by 8 points. After more back and forth between the teams, the 3rd quarter ends.

In the 4th quarter, River City scored 2 more touchdowns, one at the start of the quarter and one at the end. These touchdowns locked out the game leading to an unfortunate loss for McClatchy. The final score was 6-27 with River City winning.

Post game I was able to interview student athlete, #24 Malachi Goethe about the loss.

“How do you feel about the loss against River City today?”

“The loss tonight was a strong loss, it hit home for sure. We started off strong in the start but as the game went on we kind of just let it go. We let them get the upper hand and we let them keep it”

In the end McClatchy lost but still the team is excited, motivated, and hopeful for their next games.

Sac State @ Stanford

Sac State secured the win against Stanford. But only by a thread. The star of the game was Kaiden Bennett. The great quarterback threw the winning touchdown while dodging a sack, with 1:32 seconds left. Putting them at the top with a score of 30-23.

This was an important win for Sac State. For one, it ruined the debut of Stanford’s coach, Troy Taylor. It also might have been the greatest win in Sac States history since 1970.

It was a great game besides the ending score. Both teams played great offense and defense. It was a head-to-head game. Even though Stanford was up by half by 3 it didn’t stop Sac State. They kept their heads up and came back to score a field goal and of course the winning touchdown.

Sac State’s 2 big players to look at after the game were, K. Bennett and D. Gandy. But for Stanford, they had 3. J. Lamson, E.J. Smith, and E. Ayomanor. K. Bennett with an amazing passing yard number of 279, while Stanfords J. Lamson only had 138.

For the fans, the stands looked packed. Everybody in the West, East, North, and South parts of the stadium. The capacity of Stanford Stadium is 50,424. But the number that was attended was 23,848, almost 30,000 people. Yes, only 47% of the stadium was attended even though it looks like it’s packed.

Back to the teams though. Both teams greatly had over 300 total yards. 2 turnovers, and one team with 23 1st downs and the other with 18. Even though both teams had stats over the other, it didn’t stop it from being a head-to-head game.

Now for the amazing coach. Troy Taylor is Sac State’s former coach. He coached for 4 seasons and led to them beating Colorado 30-28 in 2012. He also led them to a 30-8 record and their first win in the FCS playoffs. Before he got replaced by Andy Thompson, who was the defensive coordinator for Sac State.

Unfortunately, Lamson got injured, but not before getting 121 yards for his college debut. Also ran for 36 yards and 16 carries.

Sac State and Stanford also have a good rivalry. But this time Sac State got the upper hand and beat Stanford by a very thin thread.

Club Rush 2023 Highlights

With a new year at McClatchy, comes another club rush. Plus, it seemed as busy as ever!

McClatchy’s student population has grown significantly. Hundreds of students rushed into the lunch quad wanting to get a look at every booth. There was absolutely no shortage of clubs with over forty available to join.

Finding a club that interests you is a great way to become a part of a community of like-minded people. Clubs are places to make friends and pursue your interests outside of school. With so many clubs, finding a club that’ll suit you is almost guaranteed.

The number of clubs to choose from was vast, so how did club organizers influence people to join their clubs? Well, many decided to draw people in with music, and beautiful decorations, while others gave out snacks and candy to people who stopped by.

With forty-five great clubs to go over, here are some highlights from some of them.

The New Romantics Club, a new book club this year focusing exclusively on romance novels, held a book raffle for those who signed up. They also gave out homemade heart-shaped sugar cookies. And by the look of it, people were lining up to sign up.

A new club, Asian Plus Club, is all about sharing various Asian cultures with everyone. To draw people to their table, they gave out various Asian candies and drew intricate pictures of anime characters and other mascots.

Life Skills Club is focused on teaching its members basic, necessary skills.  They plan on going over many things, like allocating funds, to help their members achieve financial success and stability. So, if you want to be even more prepared for your life after high school, Life Skills is the club for you.

Another club, The Freedom Club, is focused on raising awareness of the growing problem of human trafficking. They plan on holding fundraisers to support their cause, possibly donating what they make to charity.

The Satirical Conspiracy Theory Club is about wearing your tinfoil hat and sharing your lighthearted (not offensive) conspiracy theories with others.

Overall, this club rush was very successful, drawing in hundreds of students eager to join clubs.  If you missed it, you can always join a club at a later time by attending a club meeting.

Closure Conflict: Why are so many small restaurants being shut down?

Sacramento, CA is home to many small businesses and small business owners. Restaurants are among the most common types of these businesses.

However, according to fourth.com, many of those restaurants closed as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. The question though, is how did the pandemic affect those restaurants?

The pandemic was a hard time for all of us, but it was even harder for small restaurant owners. During the pandemic, many small restaurants were forced to close down due to high rent, lack of business, lack of employee payment, and overall inflation.

How did the pandemic cause those terrible things? According to brookings.edu, it’s simply the fact that it directly raised prices rather than wages. Nationwide Financial claims that the pandemic, “has played a leading role in the jump in inflation as lingering COVID-induced supply chain disruptions have made it difficult to find some items while driving up consumer prices.”

What they mean by this is that because of COVID-19, many of the supply chains that would deliver food and all of the materials that are needed to supply a restaurant were highly affected. Whether that be staff issues, trouble transporting the product to the supply chains, or there was no product at all.

COVID-19 also caused issues in the farming industry. Not only did COVID-19 cause a supply crisis, but it affected mankind. There were no laborers to farm for the food that would be needed to supply those restaurants, which played a huge role in why these businesses shut down.

As well as the restaurants that are shut down, there are many Sacramento restaurants that are struggling and not far from closing completely. These restaurants could be victims of the same problem. Considering the fact that these businesses are the only source of income for the owners, we need to stop these closures.

One restaurant, Old Soul Coffee, is a perfect example of going from struggling to success in their business. Old Soul Coffee had seen its patronage decline. All because of coronavirus. Although they had this decline, they managed to keep going and have their business continue to strive.

How did they manage this? All because of other local businesses. As well as their customers and their continued support. Customers would instead go to Old Soul Coffee to pick up coffee beans instead of paying extra at say, a grocery store. This is what we are trying to endeavor for. For people to continue to go to these small businesses to stop the restaurant closures.

Give your support to the following small businesses, though these aren’t the only ones facing possible closure, and try to make a change.

Oscar’s Very Mexican Food – 3061 Freeport Blvd, Sacramento, CA 95818 or 1350 Harbor Blvd A, West Sacramento, CA 95691

La Capital – 1535 N St, Sacramento, CA 95814

Thai Canteen – 1501 16th St Ste109, Sacramento, CA 95814

Tres Hermanas – 3260 J St, Sacramento, CA 95816

Simons Bar and Cafe – 1415 16th St, Sacramento, CA 95814

Light the Beam Sacramento!

In the 2022-2023 season, the Sacramento Kings made a massive impact as they made it to the playoffs for the first time in nearly seventeen years, taking down some of the biggest teams in the NBA. The team finally ended what has been repeatedly referred to as the longest drought in sports history.

The Kings’ objective this season was to completely rebuild the team. They brought in a new coach, Mike Brown, and added new players including Domantas Sabonis (Center), and Kevin Huerter (Shooting Guard). Though the first few games were rocky, as soon as these players got acclimated, their positive impact was clear. For context, in seasons prior, their record was consistently around 25-35 wins and 40-50 losses. These new additions to the roster, along with the others, brought the Kings to a winning record of 48 wins and 34 losses.

Sacramento finished third in the Western Conference during the regular season, which is a remarkable accomplishment. The Western Conference has multiple elite teams, including the Los Angeles Lakers and the Golden State Warriors, both of whom were ranked below the Kings going into the playoff season. This accomplishment shows the King’s progress and competitiveness, and it sets them up well for future success.

The Kings’ season has been nothing but high hopes and accomplishments. Star players for the Kings, namely the point guard and first-time all-star this year De’Aaron Fox, have brought the team some fame both locally and all around the NBA.

Since being drafted 5th overall in 2017 by the Kings, Fox has done nothing but improve his game, which showed this season. Fox won the Clutch Player of the Year award this season. He also led the NBA in total points of 194 in the clutch series, according to The Sacramento Bee

The two all-stars on the team, Fox and Sabonis, are considered by the masses to be the backbone of the Kings. They helped get the team to the playoffs, but also were recently named to the all-NBA third team. Other players such as Malik Monk and Kevin Huerter were also crucial pieces for the Kings. Coach Mike Brown, who came to Sacramento to take a head coaching position, was named coach of the year, bringing hope and revitalization to a team on the verge of moving to Seattle. This brought the fans and the city of Sacramento alive.

The creation of the beam was another powerful moment that encouraged and garnered support from the fans. According to Front Office Sports, the beam is powered by four lasers capable of producing 1,000 watts of RGB laser power, making it “the brightest full-color laser equipment in the world.” The phrase “Light the Beam,” was brought along with it, and the fans love it. The beam was lit on gameday after every win until midnight, symbolizing a beacon of hope for the team and the city.

After being one of the worst teams in the league for years, the Kings finally made a playoff appearance. Their first-round battle was against the defending champs, the Golden State Warriors. All the attention was on the Warriors and many predicted they would win the whole series in a four-game sweep. The Kings surprised the basketball world when they brought the Warriors all the way to game seven. Sadly, the King’s season ended there and the Warriors moved on. But again, making it to the playoffs at all is great, and seeing them put up a good fight against the Warriors was really entertaining.

This season was full of victories, despite our team no longer competing in the playoffs. The Kings received attention around the world, and will be propelled towards more success in the future with the locals’ newfound pride and excitement around them. With sold-out games bringing Golden 1 alive, the Kings should bring home a championship in no time. Things are only looking up for Sacramento now: this team is not going anywhere anytime soon, especially as they’re stacked with young players who have plenty of years left in their careers. Rivals better get ready to feel the roar of the Sacramento Kings.
