Celebrating 100 Years of Disney

On October 16th Disney celebrated its 100th anniversary. With this huge milestone let’s take a look at the creations and impacts of Disney and what’s to come in the future.

Disney has created hundreds of fictional characters for their stories with the most notable being Mickey Mouse, but when exactly did Mickey Mouse come to light?

Mickey first appeared in his iconic steamboat intro in 1928. While most believe that Disney created this infamous character that isn’t the truth. Ub Iwerks created Mickey who then sold the rights to Disney.

Mickey’s character design originated from the very first Disney character, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit.

The very first Disney Princess was Snow White in 1937. This was then followed by Disney’s version of Cinderella, and then Aurora more commonly known as Sleeping Beauty.

Through Disney’s empire, they have created 494 Movies, many show series, and twelve theme parks worldwide.

To help celebrate this milestone Disney has created a fun game where you have to collect 6 different character cards weekly, on the app TikTok.

They also decided to release to the public a newly restored 4K version of the movie Snow White. Along with that was a short film titled, Once Upon a Studio, which featured all of the Disney characters coming together to take a picture.

Disney owns a variety of different content, like Pixar, National Geographic, Star Wars, and Marvel.

In 2024 Disney will release new movies like a new Planet of the Apes, and a live-action prequel to The Lion King, which shows Mufasas and Scars’ relationship prior to Mufasa being king.

Disney is worth a whopping 153.24 billion US dollars which will probably only go up due to their services like Disney+ and all of the future content they will create.

Disney cares so much about consumers’ experiences that they have created new colors for their theme parks to help people fully be entranced. “Go away Green” is put onto things like light poles and trash cans which makes them not stick out to the eye.

From fairies, and dragons, all the way to aliens Disney has created characters that have become something special to people across the globe all starting back to the man himself, Walt Disney.

Walt Disney’s creations have had an impact on families’ lives worldwide for the last 100 years, helping create memories and spark imagination, so one can only wonder what will happen in the next century.

Best Places to Chill, have a Picnic, or Study!

Are you trying to find some new places in the Sacramento area to hang out or study? Well, I’d be happy to tell you about some of my favorite places in this town to hang out and do activities like picnics, studying, and rocking out!

The first place on this list is the one and only Plaza Cervantes Park located at 2115 11th Ave, Sacramento, CA 95818. I love this place so much because everyone that goes is super chill and super kind. They pick up their trash whenever they are finishing a sandwich from The Sandwich Spot across the street and in general, the park is great to visit and bring pets on weekends.

I have had some great mornings there sipping coffee. It is overall a nice place to hang with friends and even practice music. I usually bring my Acoustic guitar out with me to the park and write some tunes there. The best times to be there are most definitely in the mornings because you have the park to yourself most of the time and can sit with a still mind.

While you are there, say hello to the statue standing proudly in front of the park. Fun fact: the statue used to stand inside or near the plaza area. Where the defunct downtown plaza once was and now where DOCO exists.

Now one of the best places in all of Sacramento is Five Sips Coffee and Tea located at 2104 11th Ave, Sacramento, CA 95818. A bonus is that it’s located right next to Cervantes Park. A wonderful park next to a wonderful Coffee shop? Yes, please! Five Sips Coffee to me is the shrine of all coffee shops because everyone there is like family. Even if you haven’t visited it and you decide to check it out, you’ll leave having had a welcoming and enjoyable experience.

They have so many yummy options to choose from and the inside has unique artwork to purchase from very talented individuals. I recommend the White Chocolate Mocha, It’s delicious! I love their chocolate pastries and cinnamon rolls as well. They also offer discounts to high school students. So if any of you want a place to have some delicious coffee to go with your study sessions, I recommend Five Sips Coffee! The owner, Michael, also has so many funny stories to tell and loves to present magic tricks.

The next place I like to hang out and get work done is Sacramento City College’s campus located on 3835 Freeport Blvd, Sacramento, CA 95822. Where to hang out in this place is near the trees. I feel a sense of community, it being a community college no pun intended, but I really do like it there and most of my old friends go there so most of the time I´ll randomly run into them.

It is also a great place to skate, I don’t skate as much as I used to but there are some cool curbs to hit and some great spots to film your next edgy skate-clip video. There is also a parking garage where you can get a great view of the city from afar. I love seeing it at night when all the lights are up and you can see them all beam from the garage roof.

There is also the city cafe area in the college for when we get summer temperatures. You can hide there in the shade and take a breather from the heat. The light-rail station is also located inside the campus so you can always take the light rail afterward if need be.

This one is not a shocker, but the next location I’ll mention is our own C.K. McClatchy High School. Why? Because after hours it’s a great place to walk around, and the view of the sunset from campus is so pretty. But also the track is a nice place to get some good exercise and it is a public park and historical sight so it is nice to go on walks with friends. Sometimes though, interesting things happen there. Since it’s the spooky season I will tell a spooky story:

One night I went on a walk to Marie’s Donuts. And well I do not recall why I decided to do this, maybe because I wanted to go on a night walk. But after I got some delicious donuts, I visited McClatchy´s Campus. Everything seemed normal at first glance. Until after walking around for a bit, I saw a group of kids laughing. They looked like normal average teenage kids, no different from me. I was walking back and I heard this vibrating noise almost like an airplane in the sky. I turn around and right where you can see the D Wing and the Gym. I saw a big, blue ball of light absorbing the campus buildings. After a couple of seconds, all the power on the campus goes and it is pitch black where I was standing. I heard a scream in the distance after the lights went out. It was probably the most mysterious paranormal encounter I have ever witnessed, whenever I bring it to staff or to my teachers, no one believes me.

Finally for the last entry on my chill and cool places to visit list, well this is a rocky one, but trust me it is a favorite of mine. Cafe Colonial is located at 3520 Stockton Blvd. This place has everything from delicious vegan tacos to the heaviest bands to have ever played there.

People should go there because it exposes you to new, unique genres of music and you can support local bands while you’re at it. I have played there dozens of times and as a musician, their sound is amazing. The soundboard technicians are great at their job and are willing to make sure you can hear yourself, even if your bass player wants more monitors or your drummer is tuning a snare.

It is also a great place to support locally owned businesses and a chance to support some local artists. They have plenty of metal shows but on occasion, they will host diverse bills with Indie/rap bands. I have had some of the greatest memories at that place and have met some great personalities. Everyone there is super chill and the mosh pits can get gnarly for all the metalheads/grindcore/hardcore/straightedge readers. Some come to check it out and see for yourselves because I cannot write a paper long enough about how amazing the place is.

These are all based on my personal experiences and opinions, but I hope these were helpful for anyone wanting to connect with the community more. What are your favorite places in this city?

Songs and Poems to Get You Through Fall.

Jenny kiss’d me when we met,

Jumping from the chair she sat in;

Time, you thief, who love to get

Sweets into your list, put that in!

Say I’m weary, say I’m sad,

Say that health and wealth have miss’d me,

Say I’m growing old, but add,

Jenny kiss’d me.

Metro League Championship

The McClatchy Lions have once again amazed us as they raced phenomenally on Wednesday at the Metro League Championships at North Laguna Creek Park in Elk Grove.

The Lions have been taking wins after wins the whole season and even when they don’t they keep their heads held high! There were many incredible races run that day including many of the team’s injured players being able to come out and run an excellent race.

The frosh/soph girls and boys teams took a big W, placing first. Along with the varsity boys placing first and the varsity girls placing second. A quick shoutout to Hugh Heyer who gave the crowd a thrilling show as he raced to pass another runner in front of him as he crossed the finish line. Joy McDaniel was recruited by the team’s coach, Coach Watkins, to run in the frosh/soph race due to the team not having enough frosh/soph girls to compete. She led the team to their first-place win!

As said earlier many of the team’s injured runners came out to race. Jax Leon, a senior at McClatchy, has been running cross country since seventh grade. He has been suffering from shin splints and has been out of the running game for practically the entire season. Only starting back training two and a half weeks ago and racing his first race this season at Metro Champs, Jax ran an incredible race.

“So you’ve been injured for basically the entire season, but you came back strong! How are you feeling?”

“I feel pretty good, I mean it’s lower than what I expected. I’ve only had two workouts and since I’ve been back I’ve only been running for about two and a half weeks now. Also, I think for it being my first real race of the season with minimal training I couldn’t ask for much more.”

“That’s wild that you’re already back to racing after such a short training period, amazing. I know you’re a senior and this is probably not how you wanted the season to go, but how do you feel going into subsections and possibly qualifying for sections?”

“Well I mean the team is looking really strong this year and we have a lot of good depth and a lot of fast guys in varsity. So I’m pretty confident we’re gonna make it to sections.”

“So am I! Thank Jax for your time and keep training.”

Chela Cobb, also a senior at McClatchy, has been running cross country for all four years. She is the treasurer of the student body board, which can be a really time-consuming job.

“This is your last metro champs and you went out and crushed it. How do you think you did?”

“I think I did good under the circumstances. I’m sick and didn’t run all last week because i was busy with planning homecoming. So I think I killed it!”

“Yes, girl you did amazing! How did you feel after your race? Do you feel like you were kicking enough at the end?”

“I think my kick was average. I’ve certainly had a better kick, but right now my throat is hurting. Overall I think I’m feeling good about my race”

“As you should, you did really well!”

Metro League Championships was not the only big event the team was celebrating. The team celebrated their fellow senior lions as it was their senior night. The seniors were Jaime Garcia, Jillian Palmer, Claire Mills, Jax Leon, Chela Cobb, and new French exchange student Maëlys Garros.

The seniors ran their last metro champs beautifully and the whole team came together to honor them! We look forward to seeing how the team will do this Saturday at Subsections, but from how the champs went, they got this in the bag. Go Lions!

What’s Five Nights at Freddy’s?

Five Nights at Freddy’s is a video game franchise about a pizza restaurant. However, Some kids went missing, and their ghosts started to control the animatronics that the restaurant hosts.

As many fans of this franchise know, there was a movie that came out on Oct.27. However, after many movie reviews of the movie before it came out, it was told to the fans that they shouldn’t expect anything good from the movie.

What’s Five Nights at Freddy’s? It’s a franchise of horror games, books, and as of lately a movie. It is based on a fun attraction, and the main characters are four animatronics. However, this place shut down because of reports of missing children. These children’s bodies have taken control of these animatronics. There is still a night security guard that has to take care of the animatronics and the places. In the video games, The animatronics, try to go after him and kill him and the security guard has to stay there till his shift ends, which is 6 a.m. The story behind the games and how the whole story connects is what a lot of fans like. Most of the time, the creators of the series try to make it a mystery for the fans to figure out the storyline.

With the new Five Nights at Freddy’s movie coming out a lot of people that follow this franchise are very excited to see this movie. However, over social media and reviews, many movie critics go against the movie. This movie was announced 8 years ago that it will happen. However, it has been a long wait for the fans. After many people waited, they just lost hope for this movie being anything as good as the video games or books. What people mostly like are the clues and teasers in the series as they make people want to know what happens next.

There are many animatronics in the franchise. In the very first game, there were four main characters. Freddy, Bonnie, Chica, Foxy, and Golden Freddy. In the trailers for the new movie, these characters all seem to be present. In the second video game, these same characters make an appearance, but in very bad shape. There are new animatronics introduced. They are Toy Freddy, Toy Chica, Toy Bonnie, Mangle, Balloon Boy, and the Puppet. These characters are seen in many other books and games throughout the timeline of Five Nights at Freddy’s.

These are the basics of the Five Nights at Freddy’s franchise and what’s going on with their new movie in the franchise. There could be good and bad things about this movie, but that’s for the fans to decide.

Never Walk Alone: A Short Story

*This story contains disturbing imagery*

A teenager, José Aguilar, is hanging out with his friends. It is a Saturday night and they are all walking through Old Sacramento, laughing amongst themselves.

“So we hittin’ the Ferris Wheel or nah?” said José’s friend, Angel.

Two of his other friends, Jasmine and Manuel, agreed, “Yeah!”

José, checking the time, realizes that it is almost 11 p.m. and time for him to get going.

José disappointingly says to Angel, “Aye bro I gotta go home.”

“What?” He replies, disappointed.

“Yeah, my ma gon’ be on my ass. My fault.”

“If you stay like 30 more minutes, I’ll give you a ride home,” Manuel offers

“I can’t bro, I’m sorry,” José says.

They say goodbye to José and he begins to walk home. As he is walking home José’s mom texts him and says that he better be home in 5 minutes. So José then cuts through an alley to save himself some time. He walks through the alley where he finds himself facing some dumpsters. He passes the dumpsters and at the end of them there is a crouching woman, her back facing José, and it seems she is covering her face. While he is passing her he notices she is crying, but he pays no attention to her and continues to walk.

He reaches the end of the alley, but he then hears the dumpsters. They make a loud noise, so José turns around to confront the commotion. He turns and sees the lid of a trash can close, but he notices something strange. The lady is gone. He is frightened. He doesn’t know what to do. Should he be scared, should he carry on, he doesn’t know. Ultimately he decides to just continue to walk home.

He turns back around and there she is. The lady is in front of him, at the end of the alley. Her back, still facing him. Then she turns around, with a grin, and reveals her face. Her face can only be described as something from a horror movie, something that couldn’t be real. It seemed as if something or someone had taken a bite out of the flesh. All of the skin that might’ve once made her beautiful, had been gone. All that was left of her face was what should’ve been hidden by her skin. Her blood oozed from everywhere, her nose only being that of bone, her eyes popping out like the moon at night. And the grin. The grin was the most unnerving. It seemed as if it had been slit, the edges stretching from cheek to cheek.

José stands there, frozen as if he had been doomed for life to just look at her. The lady then reaches behind her back and reveals a knife. José is terrified. Then in an instant, the lady darts for José. He suddenly regains the ability to think, and in a split second, he too takes off running. He runs back down the alley and towards the direction of his house. He continues to run down countless streets, but so does the lady. Although it was a weekend, there was not a person in sight who could hear his shouts.

He turns a corner, just one last street, and reaches for his key. He turns around to see the lady, but she is no longer following him. José, still frightened, opens the door to his house. He has won and can finally breathe. He sits on his couch and relaxes. Then he pulls out his phone to text his friends what had just happened, but hears a noise coming from upstairs. He calls out for his mom to let him know he is home, but gets no reply. He checks her location to see if she is even home, but she’s not. José, almost passing out from exhaustion, gets up to check what’s upstairs. He goes to turn on the stairwell light, but it doesn’t work.

“You know, ‘cus why not?” José storms back to the couch in frustration.

José grabs his phone from the couch then gets the courage to walk upstairs and turns on his phone flashlight. He points the flashlight up the stairs and makes a shocking discovery. The lady is in the house, staring at him from the top of the stairs, still with the same grin.

José runs out of the house, along with the lady. He runs anywhere he can and he finds himself running through another alley. He tries to escape the lady, but it is too late. The lady catches up to José and stabs his back with the knife. José and the lady fall to the floor. The lady then begins to continuously stab José with the knife, he spits out blood and cries for help. He’s gone. The lady then gets up and walks away crying. José’s body lays in the alley, lifeless, one stab wound after the other covering his body, no one in sight to find him.

Halloween Favorites

Halloween Favorites of 2023 this year are all about the costumes and candy.

The best Halloween candy that is being passed out from every neighborhood, in my opinion, is Candy Corn. They have Halloween colors on the candy, they smell so good, and they come in huge bags.

Candy Corn is a very big debate about whether they are good or not. Some people hate them and some that enjoy this candy. The texture is odd but I like that it doesn’t dry out your mouth like other candies and chocolates would. They also sport the Halloween colors. I mean come on orange, yellow, and white are a part of Halloween colors.

A lot of people think it tastes like cardboard but I’d say they’re wrong, I think it tastes like a marshmallow, just with a different texture. It has a plastic taste to it, but a good type of plastic taste. Not a lot of people pass this candy out, but I’ll go out of my way to get it at the store. A big bag of them too. It also looks sort of like corn.

Now onto the best costume Idea I have seen or heard of this year, the one and only Justin Bieber. People go all out for these costumes, they do their makeup, and the Justin Bieber one just gets me every time, they usually use his 2015-era style. White jeans, a white jean jacket, a purple hoodie, his purple hat, and his all-white shoes with the mic. They even put their hair swished to the side.

I also have seen people making a costume dressed up as the people from the Avatar movie. They make it look so surreal with the blue-painted body and the ripped clothing pieces. It just amazes me to see how many people are that creative to think of such things.

Store-bought costumes are not my favorite because they’re not very creative. Instead of thinking of what you want to be and getting all the materials and the items together. Making time to create the final look and piece it together piece by piece trusting the process along the way is what makes them feel accomplished at the end of everything.

I’ve also seen a lot of people dressed up as the character The Nun and scaring people with groaning sounds and running towards them. They even leave behind fake pieces of body parts.

It’s so cool to see how many creative people there are out there to come up with all of these costumes to be worn outside publicly. My favorite so far though is the Justin Bieber costume.

Vapa’s Fall Concert: Wonder

The VAPA student orchestra is showcasing their latest composition in their fall concert, Wonder, “an evening of music dedicated to the dreamers, romantics, and optimists.” The event included three poems by Annette Wynne which set the tone for the following songs that were played throughout the show. The concert was hosted on October 26, in the CKM auditorium. If you missed it, be sure to catch their winter show to take place later in the school year!

The concert was very diverse in the music that was showcased, including not only the VAPA orchestra but multiple songs with the jazz band, as well as a few songs with a full choir. The latter was the most surprising, but all parts of the showcase were equally impressive.

The first half of the concert began with the poem, “I Like to Wander off Alone”, by Annette Wynne, which describes curiosity for nature and the world. The songs that followed the poem continued this theme, beginning with “The Bird” by F.J. Haydn and Matthew Moreno and finishing with “Sonata for Flute & Piano” by Francois Poulenc. The sonata seemed to be a highlight of this half of the show, since a few people almost started to clap in the middle of the song, despite it never pausing for applause. Whether this was enthusiastic or accidental, it showed the audience’s appreciation of the show.

After a short intermission, the second half of the show began with the orchestral song, “Afterburn” by Randal Standridge, only to be followed by a performance from the jazz band; It was quite the switch, but the jazz band was so well organized that it flowed smoothly. Songs played during the jazz section of the show were also accompanied by vocals from Cara Taylor, which complimented pieces like “S’Wonderful” by George and Ira Gershwin very well and gave more excitement to an already lively performance.

The second part of the last half of the show was marked by a final poem, “You Can Measure a Steeple” by Annette Wynne, which was followed by songs like “Moonlit Skies” by Sean O’Loughlin. This song in particular was accompanied by a screen that rolled down during the song to display pictures of the moon. This song was the only one to have a visual aid, but it complimented the piece well, making the whole performance feel very calming.

To finish the concert, the entire orchestra played a rendition of Katy Perry’s “Firework”, a familiar song to those who go to football games as that’s the only other place it had been performed before. With the lyrics performed by brass instruments, the show ended on a very playful note, as opposed to the incremental style of previous songs.

At the end of the show, it was announced that the orchestra would be auditioning for some bigger performances later this year, mentioning that it is important to get some quality videos for their performances for that reason. Hopefully, this concert will allow the VAPA music team to get many more opportunities in the future. Keep up with their newest concerts via their Instagram, @ckmvapa, or future announcements like this!

Halloween Costumes on Campus
