What remains a mystery to the U.S. government?

Practically every government possesses a secretive group that is in charge of work behind the scenes, pursuing confidential missions and dealing with classified intelligence information. Civilians are often pretty unaware of any of these departments’ activities, which of their endeavors we might be paying for, and more. The government has far more secrets than I could discuss in a single article, but the following examples are intriguing, mysterious cases that we have speculated about.

  1. The UFO program

There were many rumors about the existence of a program for UFO surveillance in our government, but for years this program did not get formal recognition from the Department of Defense. Funds do not go to this program anymore; however, some people believe that it still operates today.

  1. FBI tracking down Bigfoot

As every so often people have reported a sighting of Bigfoot, the FBI was once actually studying and investigating Bigfoot. An agency file developed all about Bigfoot, which not only implies that this creature was indeed real, but also might imply that it is now deceased, since this information has been released to the public.

  1. The Navy UFO captures got leaked

Up to three captured photos of UFO activity were leaked to the public but were meant to be kept a secret. Along with the confirmation of the Navy actually recording it, this would prove the fact this was meant for only the Navy to have access to, not the public.

  1. CIA created a robotic dragonfly & robotic catfish

The government created a technological device back in the 1970s which was called the “insectothopter” and was an unmanned aerial vehicle–essentially, a miniature drone. It was hand painted to look identical to a dragonfly and sized to scale, but equipped with incredibly advanced government technology. The second device, a catfish robot spy, was made in the 1990’s also by the CIA, allegedly for the purpose of a “feasibility study”–whatever that means. Why would the CIA create an unmanned underwater vehicle if it would not serve some sort of government purpose? There has to be more to the story of these seemingly pointless inventions; the CIA might be withholding the truth.

  1. The military attempted to use lighting as a source of weaponry

There was this idea that lighting could be harnessed as a very powerful weapon that would not be traced by enemies. This was the CIA’s first idea involving the use of weather as an offensive and defensive weapon. According to a Popular Mechanics article, declassified documents from 1967 reveal the consideration of using lightning to assassinate people. I would highly recommend looking into this article for further information, as this is my favorite government mystery to read about. They had executed this tool proving it could actually function, but for unknown reasons, it was never put to use in the ways initially intended.

I hope that one or all of these brief summaries of government mysteries was intriguing, and maybe some details were even intriguing enough to inspire additional research or theorizing.

The Last of Us Adaptation: Look For The Light

Final episode released on 3/24/23

Rating: 5 Roars

The Last Of Us is a TV show based on a game with the same name, and has recently released its final episode concluding the first season. The show is set in a brutal post-apocalyptic world, where raiders, bandits, and the infected run rampant. Due to the heating of the Earth, the Cordyceps, a fungus that infects bugs with zombie-like symptoms, evolved to be capable of infecting humans. In turn led to a zombie apocalypse.

The story follows Joel Miller, a gruff old man born before the outbreak, who has lost his daughter, Sarah. The plot kicks off when he receives an offer to transport some important cargo: a young girl who is immune to the effects of the Cordyceps.

In many cases, the show makes the game look like it missed a lot. Characters who formerly had relatively shallow personality development before they died had a lot more character to them. Episode three is an absolutely beautiful love story that builds on a character who only appears once in the game version, and I am all for it. It strays away from the events of the game at times to express some new ideas, but keeps all the most iconic moments.

If I had to pick just one tiny complaint, it would be the lack of action. It’s sort of rare to get action in the middle of the episode, but it’s always worth it to look forward to, as it can be very, very tense.

The ending of episode eight really got to me. There is an intense scene in a burning diner, with Ellie in a constant state of panic as she takes out what is essentially the antagonist of the episode. Then the scene cuts to the frigid outside, Ellie is a bloodied mess, and likely will not forget what just happened for a while. Joel, seeing this, does something he hasn’t done in 20 years; comfort somebody. “It’s okay, babygirl,” he says–a phrase he had not uttered for twenty years. The two walk away, then credits roll. What possibly makes this scene even more powerful is the shot outside was inserted before the shot in the diner, bringing some perspective in.

As I was watching this, I wondered at times, “Why couldn’t the game adaptation for [insert game] be like this?” But a question like that has a rather simple answer; the game creator is a director. Rather than just handing it off to some random company to be transformed into a film or show, Neil Druckmann (the creator) found a crew who actually liked the game. Most of the time, movies for video games are directed by people who only see the money in a project; they don’t care if the product is good or bad or accurately depicts the vision of the game. They just want to be involved in its production because it is tied to a popular game which indicates money.

By getting the original creator on board, HBO was able to produce a masterful retelling of an unforgettable story.

McClatchy Lions Varsity Baseball Winning Streak

In a brutal game against the Canyon Crest Ravens, McClatchy Lions Varsity Baseball team took the lead in the game with 3 runs in the second inning. Held in San Diego on April 6th, the Ravens suffered a massive loss on their home field with a 9-2 end. Jack Smith, with a batting average of 0.467 batting average and a 0.636 on base percentage, continues to shake the competition. McClatchy’s next game on April 11, will be against the Burbank Titans who have a current standing of 4-4. Burbank won a recent non-league game against Sacramento with a 10-4 win. The next game the Lions will face will be an interesting one to say the least.

Local Sacramento Restaurants You Should Visit

Sacramento is not a huge city. We who live here tend to frequent the same places–the same stores, parks, and restaurants. This is not necessarily a problem, but it’s always nice to try new things, because without doing so, people may be missing out on what could be their new favorite thing. There are many restaurants in Sacramento that have amazing food but aren’t super well known because everyone is used to going to the same old places. Here are some local Sacramento restaurants that I would highly recommend.

Azul | Mexican Food and Tequila Bar: Azul serves great authentic Mexican food. They sell amazing enchiladas and allow customers to choose between green, red, or mole sauce. You can also choose to add either chicken or cheese. The street tacos are one of the most popular items. On weekends only, they serve delicious Tacos De Birria. Azul also provides numerous vegetarian friendly menu options.

Cafe Bernardo: Cafe Bernardo serves American style food. They are loved for their amazing breakfast options. To those who have a sweet tooth, Cafe Bernardo makes a great french toast dish and their waffles are to die for. The Bernardo benedicts are another popular item. A safer but still very solid option to check out would be the avocado toast. Along with their killer breakfast and brunch foods, Bernardo also has an impressive selection of lunch and dinner options including fish, burgers, sweet potato fries, and salads.

Paesanos: Paesanos offers delicious Italian food. Their menu includes primarily classics such as pizzas, salads, and different types of pasta. One of my favorite plates to eat at Paesanos would be the Tortellini Formaggio. They are also known for the Fettuccine Arrostiti pasta dish, so I would recommend either of those. For an appetizer, one of my favorites is the fried calamari.

Sushi Cafe: Sushi Cafe is a yummy, cozy restaurant for Japanese cuisine. The food is high quality and even better, it is affordable. Sushi Cafe isn’t crazy expensive like many other sushi restaurants, so it is a great place to go when you have a big family or are going with a lot of people. On top of that, the service is fast, efficient, and friendly. There are a variety of interesting sushi rolls to pick from, all of which are delicious. Sushi Cafe is especially acclaimed for their “bento box,” which is a generous serving of your choice of entree with traditional items like edamame, shrimp tempura, and California rolls, on the side. For appetizers, the gyoza are yummy, and customers are always provided complimentary bowls of Miso soup.

Sellands: Sellands is a classic healthy American food spot. The most popular burger-type item is the All American Cheeseburger, which I think is always a solid choice. Sellands’ wood-fired pizzas have almost ten different options, and they’re so good that the Sellands venue in the Golden 1 Center sells strictly their pizza. They also have really good pizza. My personal preference would be the Margarita pizza, but they have ones with more elaborate toppings as well, such as the chicken, bacon, jalapeno, and goat cheese pizza, for example. For a lighter meal, there are many delicious salads offered as appetizers or main dishes.

I would rate every one of the restaurants mentioned above five stars. Not only do they serve quality food, but they all have nice ambience and top notch service. The best thing about checking these eateries out is that as we buy meals from them we are supporting small and local businesses and that’s something incredibly important.

McClatchy vs. Monterey Trail

The C.K. McClatchy High School Varsity Boys’ Volleyball team lost their home conference game against Monterey Trail on April 10. The ending game score (3-0) had the Lions feeling defeated after their previous win against Chico High School. C.K. McClatchy still has some fight left in them. Star player, Nathaniel Steele, has become an asset to the Lions. Steele and his contributions to the team have helped the Lions to keep their winning spirits up.
