New ASB Board Aims To Work Toward Unity

On January 18th, the winners of McClatchy’s ASB election were announced. After weeks of campaigning and anticipation, President Adelina Hernandez, Vice President Izzy Veran, Secretary Mackenzie Crall, and Treasurer Nicole Fong, all juniors, began to plan their upcoming year of leadership on campus.

Although each new board member will bring a unique perspective to ASB, their statements reveal a common vision for our school’s student leadership: to expand representation and create schoolwide confidence.

In the wake of recent unrest in the ASB class, Nicole Fong wishes to “settle the dust caused by all the chaos that happened in our first quarter.” She explains that the root of this chaos is the lack of guidance ASB students have had this year.

“It’s important that the students in ASB not only feel supported by other students but by the teachers as well,” said Fong. As a third generation McClatchy student, Nicole wants to share her school pride with all students and believes that this process should begin with confidence within the group of students leading ASB.

Secretary Mackenzie Crall hopes that school unity can be found through “representation of the whole school within the student government.” She believes that her victory of the race for secretary was the first step in this process.

“I felt like I could do a good job as secretary and thought that I would bring a good perspective to the board seeing that I am in VAPA and general education, and our previous board was only HISP,” said Crall. She hopes to breach the divide between HISP students and the rest of McClatchy, pulling together the campus as a whole.

Vice President Izzy Veran elaborated on this idea. She said that if ASB could persuade more schoolwide involvement, the atmosphere of the school may shift.

“I’ve seen since my freshman year that there has been less and less spirit and involvement and I’d like to bring back some of that pride in our school,” said Veran. This process will require increased communication between the representatives of ASB and the entire student body. As Izzy explained, ASB “struggles to get information out to the population.” More publicization of events as well as better awareness of ASB’s role at McClatchy will foster confidence in student leaders, hopefully paving the way for a more harmonious community.

President Adelina Hernandez believes that currently “if you’re not in HISP, it basically seems like ASB isn’t there.” Her goal is to make the face of ASB more prominent and available to all students, stripping away the “negative connotations” that are currently associated with it. This apparent exclusivity is detrimental to the program’s success, and has contributed to recent reductions in funding. “Right now we’re struggling to catch up with funds for junior prom,” said Hernandez. She believes that “once we get [it] out there that ASB is meant for everyone and affects everyone, I think that will help us solve a lot more problems.”

Adelina, Izzy, Mackenzie, and Nicole hope to build school unity by involving the entire school community. They hope that their leadership will provide the wider representation McClatchy needs in order facilitate confidence and pride among students.

January Poetry Collection

Hey

By Genesis Ellen

Call out to me if you dare

The gesture’s only fair

Vague and bittersweet in memory

I can only imagine how you feel for me

Unbeknownst to you, my heart fully shattered

Self-destructing ‘till my soul lay battered

Blindly continued, my quests for redemption

As our connection dissolved before my eyes

I unbearably forgave you and all of your lies

Music I treasure as solace invades

I no longer endure the pierce of your blades

Open-hearted and willing

Still wishing and hoping and missing and learning

Mr.

By Genesis Ellen

He’s desperately searching through archives galore

To find out cruel secrets; digging for more

Accosting the people for personal gain

He’s ornery, and refuses, to be called so vain

For deep in his soul is a meek little boy

Crying for help, ever since he lost his toy

Whimpering at night when his ego’s not in sight

For if they knew the truth, he’d be bare-

It’s unfair-

To plead for identity, and be responded to with no remedy

So he follows along with life’s strange melody

And crosses the street with his documents, allegedly

a drive

By Olivia Martinez

Whenever her favorites flowed,

The windows rolled.

Her hair danced in the wind

Twirlin’, twistin’ just as it should.

She always soaked up the memories being made

Admired the people passing by

Took these moments in all of its entirety

There wouldn’t be another day like it.

Life’s greatest delights tend to be effortless

She never failed to recognize that.

Her presence was that of an angel

Simply feeling blessed to share her joys.

For a sparse second

Everything felt okay.

Downcast

I am infatuated with you.
The way that you admire yourself in the mirror and pick the worst and best things about yourself is outstanding and yet so depressing.
You’re picky.
You’re as picky as a person with orthorexia.
Matching from head to toe with grief from losing yourself and putting thyself down from not being stronger than the storm.
You learned that you could not run as fast as the wind but could walk with the breeze.
Take it slow.
As I wish I could put my love for you into yourself so you will no longer suffer.
If you suffer I swear I will suffer with you.
how did I ever fall infatuated with such a sorrowful soul.

AirPods: What’s the Hype?

A screenshot of a recent viral video, in which a YouTuber mixed several pairs of AirPods into slime.

The first day back to break was filled of tired groans and dark sky, but something white and shiny seemed to brighten up the hallways at McClatchy. Christmas surely was a good time for McClatchy students as many  seem to be new owners of Apple AirPods, hanging out of everyone’s ears as they walk to their classes during passing period.

Apple’s AirPods are semi-new bluetooth earphones that are without wires. They come with a charging case and easily fit into one’s ears  without the struggle of detangling wires.

You look one way and a boy will have them in his ears, you look the other and a girl will be placing hers into her charging case.

Before December, I didn’t understand the hype. Airpods seemed to be just expensive earphones without the wires. What was so bad about wires? What a waste of money, I thought.

But, I get it now. I got them for Christmas and am actually really happy with them. I personally enjoy them because I can leave my phone in my room and listen to music while walking into the kitchen, or walk around my room as I clean it without having the wires hanging from my ears. I can charge my phone while listening to music, which is something I’ve missed ever since I bought a phone with only one charging port and no headphone jack. Another helpful feature of the headphones is that the music turns off when I take them out of my ears so I can answer people without having to press pause.

Though, after long periods of time of wearing them, my ears hurt. I think it might just be a problem for a select few, as I hardly know anyone who’s experienced ear pain after wearing them. However, the pain is minimal and tolerable.

AirPod owners have walked around calling the people with wires “poor,” as a joke as well as making memes and videos about it. It’s all fun and games to “flex” your AirPods as an owner of them, so don’t get upset that someone jokingly called you poor.

I never realized that so many people have them. Each day I’ll find another handful of people with them in their ears. It’s almost as if there are more AirPod owners each day.

The AirPod epidemic is annoying to some, but funny to most considering the amount of memes stemming from it. It’s enjoyable to have them and joke about them for AirPod owners but annoying for the ones with wires still. But at the end of the day, they’re just bluetooth earphones. Nothing to actually be upset about.
