Winter Sports Wrap Up

Winter sports season at McClatchy recently came to a close, and spring sports are now in full swing. As the sports seasons transition, it is important to recognize the incredible success that the winter teams reached over the past several months.

The girls soccer team made it further in the playoffs than ever before, advancing to the Division 1 Section-Finals against Franklin on February 23rd – a feat no CKM soccer team has accomplished in the last 25 years. Though they lost that night at Cosumnes River College, they still made it to the first round of the state championship after taking down Inderkum, Lincoln of Stockton, and #1 seed Davis High School.

The boys’ team beat #3 rank Inderkum when they were ranked 14th and advanced to the second round of playoffs. They earned themselves a Metro League title as well.

Girls’ basketball was a super thrilling season, with the Varsity girls making it all the way to State. The highlight of the season in my opinion was the night they demolished St. Francis in the quarter final game (February 16th). This victory, by a margin of 38 points, came from a strong and spirited performance on our home court, where the Legion definitely ‘brought the ruckus’. They were taken down by Folsom in the semi finals, but it was not without a fair fight. Besides, McClatchy was already beyond satisfied with the things that unfolded leading up to that point for our women’s basketball team.

In other news, numerous members of our Wrestling team advanced to the Section-Masters Tournament, including Austen and Ahmad. Both Brianna Hernandez and Maylan Bevens made it all the way to the competitive CIF State Championships. The wrestling athletes repped the ‘Clatch with impressive tournament victories for individuals on both the girls’ and boys’ side.

Overall, McClatchy could not be prouder of the student-athletes who represented our school in the winter sports. I look forward to seeing what our athletes can do in the spring, as teams such as Boys Volleyball, Track and Field, Softball and Baseball, Men’s Tennis, and Swim and Dive enter the scene.

Security and Safety Issues at CKM

The security and safety of students should be McClatchy’s number one priority, but unfortunately, it doesn’t seem like that’s always the case. CKM has gotten itself into many situations in the past that the student body feels could have been handled better.

Today, we live in a very dangerous world, and as we get older we realize that there are many people looking to hurt us. In the last 10 years, the recorded cases of gun violence in schools have effectively doubled.

That’s not the only issue. Previously, sexual assault in schools went largely unnoticed. Since 2017, when the #MeToo movement went viral on Twitter, schools haven’t been able to overlook harassment among their students like they used to. But even knowing all of this, McClatchy’s track record with handling these issues still isn’t totally in the clear.

Sexual harassment has been a recurring issue in CKM’s past, one of the most notorious instances being in 2016. A former McClatchy student came forward about her experience where she had been drugged and gang-raped at a party by her fellow classmates. When she approached the school about what had happened, rather than reporting it to the police, they suspended her for the duration of the semester and allowed her rapists to go on unpunished.

Similarly, in January of 2022, a walk-out was organized by students to protest CKM’s lack of awareness of the harassment taking place at their school. This was inspired by an Instagram account called “CKM Confessions” that shared anonymous statements from McClatchy students.

The Instagram account was later taken down by the school and the student behind it was suspended. After many posts mentioned cases of sexual harassment, students wanted to take action via a walk-out, which didn’t end up happening. The walkout was postponed after students held a meeting with Principal Egan wherein she promised to make teachers more aware of students that may be afflicted among other things. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem like any obvious changes have been made.

The walkout was rescheduled for December 12, 2021, but came to a halt after CKM received a shooting threat.  “I feel like this school doesn’t take into account security.” commented 12th grader Nataly Barreto.

According to EducationWeek, there have been 151 school shootings since 2018, 7 of which occurred just this year. As previously mentioned, in December of 2021, CKM faced a shooting threat of our own. An Instagram post was made by, presumably, a student, claiming they would bring a gun to school the next day. Students and families were only made aware of the threat during second period when the school went on a “soft lockdown”.

Students and their parents were reasonably scared and many were picked up from school early because of this. Being a student in America where gun use is largely unrestricted means that you’re constantly considering the possibility that your school might be next.

Students were reminded of last year’s incident when just a few weeks ago on Feb. 15, another threat against CKM and the district was made on social media. The email informing families was ambiguous when explaining the threat, leaving many worried about their safety.

The email sent out by Principal Egan states, “Overnight I was contacted by the Sacramento Police Department about a post on Facebook which indicated threats to ‘Sacramento schools’ and C.K. McClatchy High School. The Facebook account is nondescript and police are investigating the post at this time. School will remain open as this post is thoroughly investigated.”

That day at school, there seemed to be minimal security considering how severe something like that could become. This left a weird taste in students’ mouths. “What are we gonna do to protect all of the kids here today? McClatchy is a big school and anyone who already goes to our school can get in undetected. How can I help if one of my peers is hurt?” says 10th grader, Sophia Montoya.

The Facebook post was deemed not credible in a follow-up email later that day, the same as the Instagram post that had threatened to bring a gun to school in 2021. The email does not specify what “not credible” means or what brought them to that conclusion.

These only cover the major incidents, there are many more. The administration at McClatchy has made many promises about how they’ll change our school for the better, but it’s difficult to tell if there really has been any change. It’s unreasonable to expect everything to be made perfect, but at the very least, we should be able to feel safe at school.

Everything in the Sims 4: Growing Together and Infants Update

Earlier this month, Maxis and EA, the developers of The Sims 4, streamed a gameplay livestream showcasing the new features and pack details that will be arriving in the Sims 4 in the coming weeks.

The Sims has introduced a brand new life stage called “Infants”. With the free base game update, players can create their own infant, care for its needs, and watch it grow. Additionally, the new Sims 4 Growing Together Expansion Pack will introduce even more in-depth family gameplay, which has been highly anticipated for almost a decade in the Sims community.

The Sims 4 is an interactive life-simulation game, where players can create and control their very own Sim. With the game, one can create their own families, build their own homes, and explore various gameplay options.

The upcoming Sims 4 Growing Together Expansion Pack brings with it the new world of San Sequoia, a beautiful coastal region that is heavily influenced by San Francisco and the California area. This bayfront town is divided into three neighborhoods, Anchorpoint Wharf, Gilbert Gardens, and Hopewell Hills. There is a new Urban Park that offers new trails so that visiting Sims can enjoy hiking and cycling all throughout. There are also restaurants along the pier and a new splash park for Sims to enjoy afterward.

An infant’s behavior can now be changed by the new eighteen discoverable Infant Quirks: Good Appetite, Snuggly Sleeper, Frequent Hiccups, Messy Eater, etc.. You’ll also receive 18 Toddler quirks, which include being Aggressive, Having a Good Appetite, Hating Bedtime, Loving Being Carried, and more.

Since the release of The Sims 4, children have never had new aspirations, but for the first time ever they are being added to the game. These aspirations are Slumber Party Animal, Mind and Body, Playtime Captain, and Creative Genius. New children’s activities like building a treehouse, riding bikes, having slumber parties, making friendship bracelets, and more are new things that will be coming to the pack.

There is a major redesign of the elders in the game. Now, elders can enjoy a recreational center that includes a puzzle-building area and a welcoming hangout spot. With the new keepsake box, they are now more connected to their family than ever before. Elders are also now able to give advice to their grandchildren and influence many of their family decisions.

Over the course of a Sim’s lifespan, Sims can now experience milestones that are influenced by their personal growth and change as they age. For example, these milestones may occur when an adult is laid off, experiences a midlife crisis, or moves a great distance from home. When an infant takes his or her first steps or says their first words, it marks a milestone in their life as well.

As part of the new social compatibility system, Sims can now have preferences when it comes to meaningful conversations with family and friends. As the relationship grows, conversations will become more meaningful. It is possible for a character to have a closer relationship with some people in their family than with others due to different interests.

There is no doubt that Sims 4 is taking a huge step in the right direction with this release. Although it has not even been released yet, many are already calling it a “must-have pack”. So far,  many players like the direction The Sims 4 is heading in and hope that the game will continue to improve like this going forward.

C.K. McClatchy Crushing loss against Lincoln High School

On Wednesday, March 8th, the McClatchy Lions Varsity Baseball team experienced a dominating loss to the Lincoln Trojans in a 1-4 outcome at Lincoln High. After the game, the two teams upgraded their record for the season. With McClatchy’s season now1 and 3, and Linocln moving to 3 and 1.

By the time the game was over, the Trojans had much higher percentages in all aspects of the game. With the Lion’s batting average of .235 and the Trojans with an average of .316, it is clear that the Trojans had this game wrapped up in the scoring column. Although the Lions ended with a fielding percentage of .963 and the Trojans ended with a .898 percent, showing the C.K. McClatchy Lions put up a fight on defense.

With the scores coming later in the 5th and 6th innings for the Lincoln Trojans, the Lions showed heart and resilience to try and win this game, but the Trojans were too much. The C.K. McClatchy Lions did hold the Trojans to only 6 hits and the Lions were held to 5 hits throughout the game. It was a hard-fought game by both teams but the Lincoln Trojans came out on top in the end.
