AirPods: What’s the Hype?

A screenshot of a recent viral video, in which a YouTuber mixed several pairs of AirPods into slime.

The first day back to break was filled of tired groans and dark sky, but something white and shiny seemed to brighten up the hallways at McClatchy. Christmas surely was a good time for McClatchy students as many  seem to be new owners of Apple AirPods, hanging out of everyone’s ears as they walk to their classes during passing period.

Apple’s AirPods are semi-new bluetooth earphones that are without wires. They come with a charging case and easily fit into one’s ears  without the struggle of detangling wires.

You look one way and a boy will have them in his ears, you look the other and a girl will be placing hers into her charging case.

Before December, I didn’t understand the hype. Airpods seemed to be just expensive earphones without the wires. What was so bad about wires? What a waste of money, I thought.

But, I get it now. I got them for Christmas and am actually really happy with them. I personally enjoy them because I can leave my phone in my room and listen to music while walking into the kitchen, or walk around my room as I clean it without having the wires hanging from my ears. I can charge my phone while listening to music, which is something I’ve missed ever since I bought a phone with only one charging port and no headphone jack. Another helpful feature of the headphones is that the music turns off when I take them out of my ears so I can answer people without having to press pause.

Though, after long periods of time of wearing them, my ears hurt. I think it might just be a problem for a select few, as I hardly know anyone who’s experienced ear pain after wearing them. However, the pain is minimal and tolerable.

AirPod owners have walked around calling the people with wires “poor,” as a joke as well as making memes and videos about it. It’s all fun and games to “flex” your AirPods as an owner of them, so don’t get upset that someone jokingly called you poor.

I never realized that so many people have them. Each day I’ll find another handful of people with them in their ears. It’s almost as if there are more AirPod owners each day.

The AirPod epidemic is annoying to some, but funny to most considering the amount of memes stemming from it. It’s enjoyable to have them and joke about them for AirPod owners but annoying for the ones with wires still. But at the end of the day, they’re just bluetooth earphones. Nothing to actually be upset about.
