Songs and Poems to Get You Through Fall.

Jenny kiss’d me when we met,

Jumping from the chair she sat in;

Time, you thief, who love to get

Sweets into your list, put that in!

Say I’m weary, say I’m sad,

Say that health and wealth have miss’d me,

Say I’m growing old, but add,

Jenny kiss’d me.

  • Leigh Hunt

We are all familiar with the warm feelings Fall can bring, whether it’s fashion, movies, or Halloween, Fall can bring amazing feelings of comfort through art.

‘Freeway’

I stop myself just to smile

My mind wanders to you

The kind thoughts of you stay awhile

My one lane freeway to you

  • Amanda Cloninger

Tell It Like It Is

  • Aaron Neville

‘Tell It Like It Is’ By Aaron Neville has a dark undertone of instruments and lyrics to help you get into the fall mood

‘Tears Dry On Their Own’

  • Amy Winehouse.

The soft vocals of Amy really can make you think a while.

Halloween Favorites

Halloween Favorites of 2023 this year are all about the costumes and candy.

The best Halloween candy that is being passed out from every neighborhood, in my opinion, is Candy Corn. They have Halloween colors on the candy, they smell so good, and they come in huge bags.

Candy Corn is a very big debate about whether they are good or not. Some people hate them and some that enjoy this candy. The texture is odd but I like that it doesn’t dry out your mouth like other candies and chocolates would. They also sport the Halloween colors. I mean come on orange, yellow, and white are a part of Halloween colors.

A lot of people think it tastes like cardboard but I’d say they’re wrong, I think it tastes like a marshmallow, just with a different texture. It has a plastic taste to it, but a good type of plastic taste. Not a lot of people pass this candy out, but I’ll go out of my way to get it at the store. A big bag of them too. It also looks sort of like corn.

Now onto the best costume Idea I have seen or heard of this year, the one and only Justin Bieber. People go all out for these costumes, they do their makeup, and the Justin Bieber one just gets me every time, they usually use his 2015-era style. White jeans, a white jean jacket, a purple hoodie, his purple hat, and his all-white shoes with the mic. They even put their hair swished to the side.

I also have seen people making a costume dressed up as the people from the Avatar movie. They make it look so surreal with the blue-painted body and the ripped clothing pieces. It just amazes me to see how many people are that creative to think of such things.

Store-bought costumes are not my favorite because they’re not very creative. Instead of thinking of what you want to be and getting all the materials and the items together. Making time to create the final look and piece it together piece by piece trusting the process along the way is what makes them feel accomplished at the end of everything.

I’ve also seen a lot of people dressed up as the character The Nun and scaring people with groaning sounds and running towards them. They even leave behind fake pieces of body parts.

It’s so cool to see how many creative people there are out there to come up with all of these costumes to be worn outside publicly. My favorite so far though is the Justin Bieber costume.

Hispanic culture

Have you ever experienced Mexican culture? It’s very fun, cheerful, inclusive, and meaningful. There are many cultures but in my opinion Mexican culture tops all of them.

It’s unique and has a lot to its culture, for example there are Mayas, Aztecs, Zapotecs, Otomis, Nahuas, and many more. There are so many cities in Mexico. Mexico is very popular. It’s the tenth most populated country in the world with over 128 million people.

Mexico has several ethics groups. For example, mestizo makes up 62% of its population. Mexico has a lot of beautiful indigenous groups. They are all unique and have different beliefs. I grew up around Mexican culture and I think I did have a really good childhood. I feel like Mexican culture has a really good impact especially around kids because I think everything is just so family oriented. For example the candy, the holidays, the language and the food.

People should learn more about the culture because its land of vibrancy and amusing history. On top of that, the people are so inclusive and heartwarming. The country has the richest culture. It has ancient roots and modern innovations making it unique and a place people can’t resist visiting. Other reasons why Mexico has such a beautiful background is because of its surreal beaches, mouth watering food, and adventurous activities that keep the adrenaline rushing and beautiful language.

Mexican culture is very unique, from its food, holidays, traditions, music, dance and much more. Their celebrations have much more meaning, for example, Christmas has a deeper meaning than just opening presents and it’s more than that its ties in with religion. Christmas is the day Jesus was born and back then it was a day to spend with family and now it’s just something materialistic.

Another holiday that we celebrate is la rosca. It’s like a big cake and you cut it open, the inside of the bread is a baby and it symbolizes baby jesus and whoever gets it needs to make food for the next celebration. Anyways these are just some of the examples of the holidays in Mexican culture. In my opinion Mexican culture is really beautiful. Although it has to do a lot with religion when celebrating it, you don’t have to see it as that. We are very inclusive and respect one another’s beliefs.

One more beautiful thing about Mexican culture is the language. Every culture has their own language but us Mexicans have Spanish and Spanish indigenous, and believe it or not there are still a lot of people that speak it. It’s crazy because today it’s a global language with almost 500 million native speakers. Spanish is the official language for about 20 countries.

In conclusion Mexican culture is one of the best cultures out there. Don’t knock it till you try it. Anyone can experience Mexican culture. We are really inclusive and we just like to have fun. We have amazing food love to eat. Although we may be nosey, it’s just very fun and enjoyable having a Mexican family and being part of Mexican culture. Every celebration or everything that has to do with Mexican culture has a background meaning behind it, and that’s the beautiful part of it.

Lowrider Law Lifted

Lowrider cars aren’t just cars, they are much more than that. They have meaning behind all the cars and to the owners.

In 1982 lowriding became illegal because many people would use lowrider cars for gang violence, especially in the Hispanic community. People would fear that if they saw a car pass by they would be hurt.

My opinion about this law being lifted is good for me and others because people can now cruise without being pulled over for driving a lowrider. People would get pulled over because they assumed it was a gang affiliation. This caused a stigma amongst the lowrider community because people associated lowrider owners with bad people.

Lowriders are beautiful cars to be shown for their beauty and for Mexican culture. Car shows are to show culture to Mexican power and brown pride.

In the late 90s, it was thought that people drove cars like this to be aggressive or just to cause trouble, but it’s never been for that reason. There were people who were in gangs and then there were people who showed respect while driving these beautiful cars. But people in gangs would use lowriders to do drive-bys and cause gang violence.

This law being lifted is a good thing because people can now enjoy their time out in their lowrider without any trouble or getting pulled over by police. But it’s a good thing for Mexicans because now we can have more car shows to continue our culture surrounding cars and to bring in new people into the community. Our Raza is to be respected as well.

I took this picture a while back because it shows that cruising isn’t a crime but to show respect to our nation of brown power.

I feel like it is great to finally have this law lifted because a lot more cars can be shown out and about and ready to shine.

The pics I took were at a downtown car show for people to lift the law to cruise without getting arrested or pulled over. A lot of people even came around to support the culture and to lift the law.

The Best and Worst of Music Stores

As a musician in Sacramento, it can be a great place for veteran musicians and beginners alike.

However, when I was starting out playing music I had some experiences with guitar shops that were not so great. Let’s just say they were not super kind experiences. First things first, as I discuss these shops, I’d like to make it clear that it’s not to promote or discourage future business for these shops.

The first music shop that is my personal favorite is Kline Music at 2200 Sutterville Rd, Sacramento, CA 95818.

First, they have really great selections for Fender guitars specifically Jackson guitars. They are super kind and have helpful assistants. Especially, when I bought my first Fender Mustang at a good price of $400, which is somewhat of a hard deal to come by. But as of recently, I have had some experiences with their new employers that left me honestly heartbroken. I understand that they are locally owned businesses and they don’t have the same privileges as chain stores like Guitar Center.

One occasion when I was paying a visit inside the shop, I was playing a decent player series Fender Stratocaster and to top it all off I was playing at a low volume, like 3 on a practice amplifier. This tall gentleman approached me and told me that I needed to part ways from the guitar area due to me clogging up the store. Even though it wasn’t a busy day and there weren’t any guitar students inside. I was kicked out for just playing their instruments.

I still do not know what I did wrong, and I am actually old friends with one of the employees. It still baffles me. So Kline Music is a great one-stop shop music store, but when you want to know what you’re getting yourself into with purchasing an expensive guitar and would like to play it, make sure you make it quick and don’t bother asking to plug in an amplifier.

Alright so the next guitar store I would like to critique is Guitar Workshop, and this one I won’t be so nice about. One day during my practice session on my guitar, my tremolo broke and needed to be fixed along with a simple set-up for my Kurt Cobain signature Fender Jaguar. Once called Kline Music and was informed that they do not work on electrics and only do wood repairs for acoustic guitars. So I decided to visit Guitar Workshop, located in the Sacramento area of 3248 on J Street. It is dead empty.

I walk up to the counter and there is a man sitting up front and saying hello. I ask for help, but he ignores me and continues working on this other guitar. So I walk around the shop and browse. Then he finally asked me what I wanted, so I asked him how much it would cost for a set-up on my Fender Jaguar and a repair on the tremolo system and how long it would take. He tells me it’ll be around $300 and around 4 months in total for the set-up. I was in shock. I politely said, “Okay thank you very much for your time.” He gave me a discourteous look back and then I left.

According to many reviews on Google, I am not the only one who came across this kind of behavior. Some reviews include:

“Uninformed staff will typically oversell or recommend items you don’t need (No, I do not need a new Bartolini preamp, thanks for not listening though). Turnaround time is awful. Don’t ask any basic questions, there’s always passive-aggressive responses. Even if you ask for a price, they will give you a spiel before telling you.”

To leave this article on a brighter note, probably one of the best music shops ever, in existence, maybe even in the whole county, I am proud to say is Watermelon Music Located on 1970 Lake Blvd suite #1 in Davis. And let me tell you this, they are genuinely the kindest people I have ever met.

They were so nice to me, once they even did a free restring on my electric and they were all like “Dude don’t worry about it.” Everyone in the music store is not only so kind but also super knowledgeable, approachable, and relatable. They want to know what you look for in an instrument. They offer some great offers on some Fenders, Yamahas, Paul Reed Smith’s, and many rare kinds of guitars. The store also always has events happening and I was even fortunate enough to play a gig there with my band, Seawater, once. It was one of the best performances we had in a long time.

However if you don’t live near Davis and don’t think it is worth the drive all the way over. I humbly recommend “Music Go Round” at 9163 E Stockton Blvd #310, Elk Grove. I’ll tell you about my smooth experience there. Once I was at a jam session with a buddy of mine and the drumset skin on the kick drum batter head side ripped from the Jammage. So we drove to Music Go Round and right away the guys there were really cool about the tone of each layer in the skin of the drums. They were really diverse when it came to talking about music genres. Metal is one of the genres we spent nearly an hour talking about. It was a fun visit and my buddy got a good deal with the new drum skin so it was a smooth transaction.

In conclusion, this review wasn’t to bash any of the businesses mentioned, it was to spread the word. I recommend sticking to the ones that are a must-visit. I hope this article was helpful and I hope it doesn’t offend anyone that likes these stores. Thanks for reading!

Homecoming 2023

The CKM 23’ homecoming has come and gone, here is everything that you might have missed!

Homecoming has been a long standing tradition in most to all high schools and should not be overlooked as it plays a key role in one’s high school experience. According to “omella.com”, the homecoming tradition began in the 1910s “to welcome back alumni in their alma mater for a football game and other festivities.” That has not necessarily changed as compared to a modern homecoming.

The tradition would begin to gain popularity in the 70s, 80s, and 90s. Schools would have a football game and then right after, everyone would go back to the school for the dance. Now, schools, Like CKM, will typically have the football game a day before the homecoming dance.

Students here at CKM were pumped up for homecoming. This year’s homecoming week, game, and dance have all been a blast with this year’s theme being Barbie. I attended this year’s Homecoming and was able to get some quotes from attendees, this is what McClatchy students had to say.

During the dance, I got the chance to interview a couple of people who had attended. Although not being able to talk to many people as everyone was busy having fun, I still got some information.

“What made you want to come to this year’s homecoming?”

“Those who came to homecoming, went primarily just to go. They had no reason to come, but there were people that came to go on a date.”

“What would you rate this year’s homecoming?”

Those who I had asked this question all had something to say about the dance. Most people did not think the dance was all that great, with the music not being as great as past years or there not being much to do, and I can agree.

The music, although being kept up to date, was not the best in regards to a dance. It felt more of a rave with everyone circling in the middle of the gym and moshing. While some were in the gym, most people were outside standing around. Which could say a lot about the vibe of the dance.

As I said before, there was not much to do. The only thing that you could do, if dancing didn’t interest you, was eat and take pictures. This wasn’t helped by the fact that the lines took 20-30 minutes.

I get it was a dance so the main purpose was to do just that, but those two problems go hand in hand; the music was not all great in regards to a dance, so as a result there was nothing to do.

Although nothing should stop you from attending future dances, this year’s homecoming has obtained a reputation of not being all that great. As said before, nothing should stop the students from attending future dances and should be pumped for them.

CKM 2023 Homecoming Rally

Monday, October 16th, was the first rally of the 2023-24 school year. It was fun, with many different performances and activities for all the different grades to participate in. It was also an opportunity for our sports teams and clubs to showcase their talents.

They introduced our varsity football team. Yes, they are starting off the year with a stroke of bad luck. But it was fun, they were all hyped and looked forward to turning the season around. They should have introduced the junior varsity team because they put in hard work for themselves, the team, and the school. They deserve the recognition. After that, they brought out volleyball, cross country, golf, and water polo.

Performance-wise everything was amazing and well coordinated. First up was the step team. The routines were great and got everybody in the spirit. The dance team then performed and ate it up. It was coordinated and overall the choreography and music were on point. Last but not least was cheer. They were pulling moves you only see in movies. Like splits in the air and pyramids.

Faculty members dressed up in costumes, like Mr. Garibay who went as Ariel and ¨swam¨ out onto the court. Teachers even performed a dance for us dressed like Barbie or Ken. It was fun and everybody remembered their parts. When they finished up everybody cheered for their favorite teacher. The teachers looked like they enjoyed themselves as well.

ASB started the activities after all the performances were over. They asked for 3 people from every grade to come up to participate in the first of the games. The first game was played by spinning around a baseball bat, running to the line and back, and so on.

The seniors won that one but it was a close battle for every round. Next was tug-of-war. One side was football and cross country, the other was volleyball and water polo. Everybody thought football was going to win but surprisingly the other side won. Either way, it was entertaining to watch.

All in all the rally was really fun. Everybody did their parts greatly and it all came into a fun show/performance for all of us to enjoy together. For the first one of this school year, it easily beats every rally from last year and previous ones. It was nice that there was no competition between classes as everybody was wearing pink. We participated in chants together and swayed as a big happy family.

My Top 3 Fall Movies *SPOILERS*

It’s already Autumn! Are you excited about sweater weather and the cozy vibes that come with fall? Here are my top 3 fall movies to kick off the season.

#3 Twilight – My number three movie to watch when it gets cold out is Twilight. It’s a drama, fantasy, romance and was released in 2008.

The film raked in $408.4 million at the box office. Twilight is actually the first movie of the 5 part saga. In the movie, high school student Bella Swan (portrayed by Kristen Stewart) moves to Forks, Washington to live with her dad. At school, a mysterious boy, Edward (portrayed by Robert Pattinson) catches her eye.

Upon getting to know Edward, Bella notices that he does things that are unnatural. Bella does research and discovers that Edward is a vampire. Even though he is a vampire, Bella still falls for him and they get together.

In my opinion, it’s a good movie, despite how many people think the acting is cheesy. I like to think that it is so bad, it is good. In conclusion, this is my third favorite movie to watch during sweater weather.

#2 Practical Magic – My second favorite movie to watch in the fall is Practical Magic.

It is a fantasy romance movie that was released in 1998.

The film made $68.3 million at the box office. The movie is about a family of witches who live on a small island in Massachusetts, mainly focusing on 2 sisters, Sally (portrayed by Sandra Bullock) and Ginny (portrayed by Nicole Kidman).

Ginny is struggling in an abusive relationship and Sally and her have to figure out a way to stop him even after they kill him. This movie has a lot of twists and turns.

The soundtrack is also pretty good. In my opinion, this movie is enjoyable to watch and even a little spooky at times. You can see how it’s a fall movie right when you first start watching it. In conclusion, this movie is my number two go-to when I want it to feel like it’s fall.

#1 When Harry Met Sally – The first movie I will be reviewing, and my absolute favorite is When Harry Met Sally, a rom-com released in 1989.

The film made $92.8 million at the box office. The plot focuses on two strangers, Harry (portrayed by Billy Crystal) and Sally (portrayed by Meg Ryan), and how they meet. Sally gave Harry a ride to New York for college and they didn’t see each other for some time. Years later, they coincidently keep meeting at places and they finally become friends.

They both get into committed relationships and ignore their feelings for one another. Eventually, they break it off with their significant others and get together.

In my opinion, this movie was a long, but satisfying watch. Definitely brings the fall vibes. In conclusion, When Harry Met Sally is my number one movie when it comes to fall movies. I recommend this to anyone who enjoys romance movies.

Overall, these are three well-made movies that are loved by the masses. Everything about these films gives me fall vibes, even the soundtracks on all the movies are really good.

I recommend this movie to people who like staying in and watching movies while it’s raining out.

In conclusion, When Harry Met Sally, Practical Magic, and Twilight are my top 3 movies to watch in the fall

Tourist’s Guide of Mexico

Prior to November 6, 1813, Mexico was known as New Spain and not long after their declaration of independence the name was changed, breaking away from the Spanish Empire.

Mexico is the 13th largest country in the world based on the area of size and the 10th biggest in population. Prior to European contact the Aztecs dominated the regions but were conquered by the Spanish and their allies, forcing the Aztec Empire to surrender.

Over the centuries Spain expanded their territorial reign and enforced Christianity and their language. Even with 68 indigenous languages, Mexico has its own Mexican Spanish with different dialects and sociolects.

Faith is a big part of everyday life in Mexico. Not only do the citizens believe in God but they hold strong beliefs in Saints as well. La Virgen de Guadalupe made her appearance in Tepeyac and the country celebrates her on December 12th. Instead of celebrating Christmas in Mexico, they celebrate the Day of the Kings on January 6th when the children put out a shoe with anticipation from a visit from the 3 wise men.

Even dinners are different in Mexico, families sit down around 3 pm and have an early dinner which is the allotted time slot that many workers are given to go home and eat. A traditional dish from this country in Mole which is a dark brown chili sauce that reminds me of a thick gravy is served over boiled chicken.

Mexico is a place that doesn’t have a lot of water. Every few days you have to fill a big bucket or water tank to keep water in to wash your clothes, shower, use the bathroom, and wash dishes. The water that is pumped into the tanks is your water source. The water source is ¨basically¨ clean water.

Taxi in Mexico is a transportation to most of the cities of the country. The taxis in Mexico are for mostly at night because by 7 pm in Mexico, the bus drivers have ended their shift. The taxi will take you home for a long night. It’s not a safe place to walk at night because people can be killed and kidnapped.

Mexico is a vast and beautiful country with so much rich culture and places to explore.

Bathroom Crisis

Without paper towels, tampons/pads, toilet paper, locks on stalls, or working sinks, all of the student bathrooms are in a crisis. If you’ve used any of the bathrooms on campus, you have most likely found that something was missing, despite it being one of the most necessary of students’ daily needs.

Whether it’s a missing toilet paper box, a lack of sanitary products, or even (god forbid) there is no soap, there always seems to be something wrong with every bathroom students may use.

With only so many bathrooms under-supplied, the few working stalls/sinks left have lines that could take all of the passing period to wait for. Those with long treks to class often have to sacrifice bathroom breaks to avoid a tardy.

This is especially an issue when it comes to the (one and only) gender-neutral bathroom, which is constantly in use, leaving a line running down the hallway that could sometimes take even a whole class period to wait for. With the school year just beginning, many expected these issues to have been resolved over the summer, however, it seems they have only become bigger problems for students who are just trying to get through the day.

“The air is so unbelievably thick,” said senior Stephanie Morrish, who is fed up with the state of student bathrooms, particularly the stench they emanate. There have been complaints of both pee and weed smells in the bathroom, and only one of those belongs in the restroom. Another senior, Edith Blanke, complained, “The worst part of my day is the time I spend in the C. K. McClatchy student bathrooms, hands down.”

Students have protested the lack of soap, paper towels, and toilet seat covers in the bathroom, which makes the necessary restrooms challenging to use at times.

Yard duty used to regularly pop into the bathroom and make sure it was fully stocked, but it seems those trips haven’t been made in a few weeks. Bathrooms are also neglected by students alike, who misuse supplies and leave the toilets clogged and stalls vandalized…

Whatever the reason may be for the undersupply of sanitary products, the bathrooms are campus necessities. Yet, they are also one of the most neglected aspects of our entire school. Why have we given up on clean restrooms?

Bathrooms have never had the most sanitary reputation, but lately, CKM bathrooms have become borderline unusable.
